The year of 1986 was an unforgettable period in cult cinema. Here’s a look at some of our favorite film bizarrities from 1986.

Class of Nuke ‘Em High is a science fiction comedy film. One of many classic B-movies that were produced under the banner of the Troma production company.

A gonzo movie that’s always a treat to watch.
Somewhere between drinking alone in the bathroom and donkey husbandry.

It stars Janelle Brady, Théo Cohan, Gil Brenton, Brad Dunker and Robert Prichard.

Chopping Mall (1986)

Chopping Mall that is a low-budget horror film – shot for a band-aid and a broken clock. It was directed by the famed B-film director Jim Wynorski and produced by Julie Corman, wife producer Roger Corman. It stars John Terlesky, Kelli Maroney (Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Night of the Comet) and Suzee Slater.

Necropolis (1986)

Necropolis is a horror/apocalyptic film directed by Bruce Hickey and produced by Charles Band. It was filmed on a shoe string budget without all the blandishments of big time Hollywood movies. Shot in the heart of the Big Apple, it stars legendary B-movie icons LeeAnne Baker, Nadine Hartstein and Norris Culf.

Robot Holocaust (1986)

Robot Holocaust is a post-apocalyptic science fiction film shot on a razor thin budget. Set in a dystopian alternate future with a dash of sword-and-sorcery cosplay tossed in just for good measure. It was directed by Tim Kincaid, produced by Charles Band and stars Norris Culf, Nadine Hartstein and Angelika Jaeger.

Night of the Creeps (1986)

Jill Whitlow, Jason Lively and Suzanne Snyder devour the night in this horror comedy film. Directed by Fred Dekker (who also directed Monster Squad) Night of the Creeps (1986) is a loving homage to the black and white creature features of the 1950s.

Reform School Girls (1986)

Reform School Girls is a 1986 movie directed by Tom DeSimone. It’s more of an ironic tongue-and-check take on other films in the exploitation genre. Starring B-movie royalty Sybil Danning in all her glory and effulgence, Wendy O. Williams and Linda Carol.

The 2009 film Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus is a sharksploitation B-movie created by The Asylum. The movie stars Debbie Gibson and Lorenzo Lamas.

Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus Plot

A large iceberg splits from the ice in the Arctic, and a frozen megalodon (also known as a mega shark) and a giant prehistoric octopus begin to thaw out and come back to life.

When a military unit nearby uses a low-frequency sonar device, the ice splits open and the monsters begin prowling the Pacific Ocean. The shark begins going up and down the West Coast, causing havoc in California. The octopus starts wreaking havoc on the other side of the ocean in Japan.

Three marine biologists decide to trap both monsters using pheromones. The scientists, Dr. Seiji Shimada (played by Vic Chao), Emma MacNeil (played by Debbie Gibson) and Allan Baxter (played by Lorenzo Lamas) draw the beasts into a trap with pheromones. The monsters destroy a large part of San Francisco before ultimately being destroyed in a battle with a submarine.

Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama (1988)

The 1988 film Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama is a horror comedy directed by David DeCoteau and produced by the famous B-movie producer Charles Band. The movie stars Linnea Quigley, Brinke Stevens, Michael Sonye, Robin Rochelle, Robin Stille and Michelle Bauer. The film has since become a cult classic.

Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama (1988) Plot

A trio of frat boys follow around a sorority called Tri-Delta, and the girls catch them during an event in their sorority house. The frat boys are sent on a mission by the sorority to steal a trophy, but they are watched on security cameras in the mall where they go to steal it inside a bowling alley.

They find a female burglar who helps them break open the trophy room, and they accidentally free an imp from a trophy called Uncle Impie (played by Michael Sonye) which grants three wishes. One frat boy gets his wish of stacks of gold, another girl becomes the prom queen, and another boy gets the girl he wanted. However after this happens, the imp possesses them and they are turned into demons.

Suddenly the remaining frat boys and sorority sisters are trying to escape from the demons, battling their way through the mall, enlisting the help of janitors along the way who tell them that the imp is a long-imprisoned demon. In the end the burglar and one frat boy, Calvin, escape on her motorcycle.

The 1991 film Scream Queen Hot Tub Party is a comedy and horror film directed by Jim Wynorski and Fred Olen Ray. The movie was famously produced in a single day, and only has a runtime of 50 minutes. That said, the movie has become a huge cult classic, successful mainly on the merit of casting five notable B-list scream queen actresses: Brinke Stevens, Monique Gabrielle, Kelli Maroney, Michelle Bauer, and Roxanne Kernohan, even though it turned out to be Roxanne’s last film.

Scream Queen Hot Tub Party (1991) Plot

Five actresses arrive at a house in Los Angeles, attending a seminar on creating horror films. The house is empty and making strange sounds. A delivery service brings them an Ouija board, get in a hot tub, and start talking about common horror tropes of films they’ve been in. Flashbacks include clips from famous actresses like Linnea Quigley.

They cover tropes like how scream queen actresses aren’t allowed to think for themselves, often take showers at inopportune and risky times, and in general provide very self-aware riffs on the genre of B horror films.

Dinosaur Island (1994)

The 1994 film Dinosaur Island is a Roger Corman-produced science fiction film co-directed by the famous Jim Wynorski, along with Fred Olen Ray. Although it was produced shortly after Jurassic Park, it is more of a cavewoman movie than a Jurassic Park ripoff. They shot the film at David Carradine‘s ranch in Sun Valley in ten days. The film was made on a $190,000 budget.

The film stars a wide range of actors in previous Corman and Wynorski films, including Toni Naples, Tom Shell, Peter Spellos, Antonia Dorian, Michelle Bauer, Griffin Drew, Ross Hagen, Becky LeBeau, Deborah Dutch and Richard Gabai.

Plot Summary

An army captain, Jason Briggs (played by Ross Hagen) flies three military deserters back to the US for court martialing, but his airplane has mechanical problems and crash land on a deserted island.

They find a culture of cavewomen, sacrificing virgins to a large dinosaur they call the Great One. Thinking that the crash-landing soldiers are gods fulfilling a prophecy, the women ask the men to kill the Great One. The cavewoman queen, Morganna (played by Toni Naples) tells the women to not be charmed by the outsiders, but they fall in love anyway.

Kull The Conqueror (1997)

The 1997 film Kull The Conqueror is a sword-and-sorcery fantasy film. This b-movie was originally intended to be a third Conan film, it was changed to a new character after both Schwarzenegger refused to reprise his role, and Kevin Sorbo did not want to play someone else’s character.

Kull The Conqueror (1997) Movie Synopsis

After General Taligaro (played by Thomas Ian Griffith) tells Kull (played by Kevin Sorbo) that he can never join the elite force called Dragon Legion, because he is a barbarian and not of noble blood, he decides to fight for the right to join.

The King of Valusia, Borna (played by Sven-Ole Thorsen) goes mad and begins slaughtering his heirs. Kull rides to Valusia and fights King Borna, who succumbs and names him as his successor as he dies. Kull, now king, holds the right to the Dragon Region which greatly disappoints the general, Taligaro.

Kull recognizes one of the Borna harem members as Zareta, a fortuneteller who once foretold his future nobility (played by Karina Lombard). Kull attempts to free all the slaves, but finds out that the stone tablets containing the law of Valusia don’t permit this. General Taligaro try to assassinate Kull while he is being crowned King, but they fail.

A necromancer, Enaros, offers to help Taligaro kill Krull by bringing back Akivasha, a sorceress queen, from the dead (played by Tia Carrere).

Akivasha enchants Kull and becomes queen, condemning the fortuneteller Zareta to death.

Kull escapes, frees Zareta, and head out of the kingdom, looking for the Breath of Valka which is a weapon that can prevent Akivasha from turning into a demon, her final form. However, they are attacked and Zareta is captured and Kull is almost killed. He goes back to Valusia and, after getting the Breath of Valka from Zareta, he kisses the demonis Akivasha and kills her forever, then kills Taligaro.

He then names Zareta his queen and destroys the tablets, making slavery illegal.

Banzai, Lightsabers, and Childhood Nostalgia

All I could remember was some sort of really fast car, and an alien egg on the bottom of the vehicle, and the fact that the car was so fast it went through a mountain – or so I remembered.

For most of my life as a child, I had this memory of a bizarre movie scene seared into my brain. I’d seen it sometime when I was four or five. I could picture it in my mind, but before the advent of Google there was no way to find it.

Until, decades later, I actually saw the movie: The Adventures Of Buckaroo Banzai Across The 8th Dimension. Turns out I’d retained a remarkably large part of it with some degree of accuracy. Buckaroo did indeed invent an oscillation overthruster that let him drive through solid matter!

What makes it even stranger is that the movie was only a few years old when I’d seen it. Now, of course, it’s a 34-year-old oddity and cult classic. Then? I don’t know what it was.

That was the genesis of my fascination with B movies. That, and a childhood of watching old 1950s sci fi flicks that involved giant ants, zombies, and gelatinous blobs.

With the advent of the internet (or, at least, internet that was halfway fast enough to download media) I discovered a new form of B movie: the fan film. In the early 2000s throughout the later part of the decade, there was a huge surge of low-budget or no-budget science fiction films that were made by Star Wars and Star Trek fans. Although most were of laughable quality, and usually just involved overweight Jedis superimposing laser beams on their PVC light sabers, there were a few pretty incredible jewels. Computer animation had given the people the means to create convincing space battles – often even better graphics than the Hollywood movies of just a decade prior.

As we find more examples of B-movies, unnamed actors, Z-list extras, no-budget films, and the like, we’ll put them here on Cult Celebrities.

Because, after all, if you can’t make it on the big screen you can just go direct to video!
