The 1980s were an undeniably cool time for kung fu films. Like Burt Reynolds circa 1970 kind of cool.

Sadly, that level of kung-fu cool was hard to maintain and it eventually went the way of Tab cola and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.

Edwards, Bogdan Pecic, Maria Markovic and Linnea Quigley. The movie is widely considered one of the worst films of all time.

Robot Ninja (1989) Plot Summary

An artist named Leonard Miller (played by Michael Todd) is a frustrated young creative. As a comic book artist, his publisher and agent have made riches off his work. He witness a crime and decides to become his own character. He has an inventor friend build him a robot suit (actually just spandex) and starts patrolling the streets of Ridgeway, looking for people to attack. He starts taking drugs to help him perform at his physical peak. His vigilante spree builds up into a climax – his inventor friend, Dr, Goodknight (played by Bogdan Pecic), is trying to stop him from his mission, and he ultimately comes up against a crime lord in a final confrontation.

The 1988 kung-fu film Day of the Panther is a film by the famous B-movie director Brian Trenchard Smith. The film was suffering production problems, and Trenchard-Smith was brought in half-way through production to rescue what he could from the film. The movie has become a kung fu cult classic.

Day of the Panther (1988) Plot Summary

Jason Blade (played by Edward John Stazak) is a Triad-trained martial artist whose investigative partner, Linda Anderson (played by Linda Megier) is killed by a mysterious gang. He flies back to Australia and finds that a man named Baxter, the sidekick to an evil villain, killed her. Blade teams up with Linda’s cousin, Gemma Anderson (played by Paris Jefferson) to kill the crimelord in charge of the drug scene in Perth. He ultimately gains the trust of Damien Zukor, the crimelord (played by Michael Carman) and goes undercover, but ultimately surfaces to fight against him.

The 1983 film The Beast and the Magic Sword (also known as La Bestia y la Espada Magica) is a sword-and-sorcery film uniquely co-produced by Spain and Japan. The movie was tenth in the werewolf series written and directed by Paul Naschy, under the pseudonym of Jacinto Molina. The movie stars Paul Naschy, Julia Saly, Junko Asahina, and Shigeru Amachi.

The movie was never dubbed in English, distributed in theaters outside of Spain, or available on home media like VHS or DVD.

The Beast and the Magic Sword (1983) Plot

Following the events in the previous films, in the sixteen century a werewolf named Waldemar Daninsky (played by Paul Naschy) travels from Europe to Japan. He searches the temples of Japan, hoping to find someone who can rid him of his lycanthropy. He discovers that a sorcerer, Kian (played by Shigeru Amachi) and a magical sword can remove his affliction.

The Lost Empire (1984)

The 1984 film The Lost Empire is a modern sword-and-sorcery and kung-fu film directed by Jim Wynorski, as his first feature. The film was actually produced by a theater owner as a tax loss, but ended up becoming a cult classic. Roger Corman was not involved in the movie but let Jim Wynorski use his studio for production. The film stars Melanie Vincz, Angelique Pettyjohn, Angela Aames, and Raven De La Croix.

The Lost Empire (1984) Plot Summary

In Chinatown, a deadly robbery results in a statue being stolen from a jewelry shop. After a police shootout, only one cop survives. The next day a criminal is holding children hostage at a school, but a figure dressed in black comes in and kills all three terrorists. An elite member of the LAPD, this woman is named Inspector Angel Wolfe (played by Melanie Vincz). She hears that her brother is the surviving cop from the robbery, so she visits him in the hospital. He gives her a star and a mysterious message.

Angel’s friend, an FBI agent, recognizes the star and says it can grant immortality but must sacrifice a single soul each day to the Devil.

Visiting the jewelry shop crime scene, the statue’s glowing eye drops into her purse. An old Chinese man tells her about a legend of the Eyes of Avatar, which give the holders incredible powers. He also tells her that a cult leader is involved with the situation and that Lee Chuck (played by Angus Scrimm) is the immortal one behind all this.

After her brother succumbs to his injuries, Angel gathers two of her friends, Whitestar (played by Raven De La Croix) and Heather (played by Angela Aames) to go to the cult’s island. The cult leader holds a martial arts tournament so she enters in order to face him and have a final showdown.

The 1987 film Miami Connection is a kung-fu action film. It has become a cult classic, famous for being blissfully un-self-aware and renowned for the in-movie band, Dragon Sound.

The movie was produced and directed by Y.K. Kim, a Korean martial arts personality, and he also starred in the main role.

Y.K. Kim mortgaged his taekwondo school, used up all of his savings, and got loans from friends in order to finance the movie. He finally sold it to a distribution company for $100,000.

Miami Connection (1987) Movie Plot

Ninjas, riding motorcycles and swathed in black, interrupt a coke deal somewhere in Miami. The ninjas steal the drugs and go to a club. Seeing his sister onstage with the bassist of the performing band, he becomes angry. The band, Dragon Sound, is made up of five orphaned men who room together, go to college, play music, and train taekwondo.

When another club owner starts a fight because Dragon Sound was hired away from his club, a street fight ensues and Dragon Sound beats them. The gang of ninjas attack the band, but are beaten once again. Accidentally killing one of the leaders of the gang, the band is now targeted by the ninjas.

The keyboardist reveals that he has been looking for his father. He learns that his father has been located, so they pitch in to purchase a suit, and on the way to the airport they are ambushed by the ninjas. They battle in the park, and manage to kill all of the ninjas. The keyboardist, heavily injured, is visited in the hospital by his father.

The 1977 action/kung fu film Mighty Peking Man is a remake of King Kong starring Evelyne Kraft. The film was released in the US in 1980, under the name Goliathon.

The Mighty Peking Man (1977) Plot Summary

A group from Hong Kong, lead by Johnny (played by Danny Lee) is exploring the Himalayan mountains. They discover the “Peking Man”, who is a Yeti, who is there with Samantha, a feral blonde woman (played by Evelyne Kraft). She knows how to swing on vines and talk with animals.

She is bitten by a snake, and Johnny must suck out the venom, and they fall in love. They take her and the Yeti back to Hong Kong, where the monster is put on display. Samantha continues to wear her animals skins, and Johnny gets back with his girlfriend with whom he had broken up earlier.

Samantha’s feelings are hurt so she runs off, putting herself in danger, so the Yeti freaks out and kills her harasser. The Yeti continues to rage, climbing a tall tower. In a scene similar to King Kong, helicopters attack the Yeti and kill him. Samantha and Johnny are also injured in the scene, which then ends.

The 1984 film Ninja III: The Domination is a horror–kung fu film released as the third part of the Ninja trilogy by the Cannon Group. It was directed by Sam Firstenberg. Although critically panned, it has since become a cult classic martial arts film.

Ninja III Movie Plot

The film begins with a ninja exploring a cave, finding weapons and various items. The ninja then brutally assassinates a couple of golfers on a green, until the police show up and he is chased into the desert and shot.

The main character, Christie (played by Lucinda Dickey), is then introduced. She works as a lineman for a telephone company, but also teaches exercise class at night. She discovers the body of the ninja and is possessed by his evil spirit. After a romantic interlude with a police sergeant that she reported the corpse to, she discovers that her entire house is possessed by the spirit.

Christie falls into a trance, and then the evil spirit uses her body to avenge the killers of the ninja. The sergeant finds out that Christie is slaughtering all of his police colleagues, so brings her to a guru for a failed exorcism.

Finally, a ninja appears and, after a battle, she is released of the evil spirit, which turns into a final boss. Both Christie and the ninja, accompanied by her police boyfriend, battle the evil spirit until he dies, creating a chasm which both almost fall into. The evil spirit ninja fades away and everyone walks into the sunset.
