The 1970 film Cotton Comes To Harlem is a blaxploitation film that was written and directed by Ossie Davis. The movie stars Raymond St. Jacques and Redd Foxx, and was one of the most commercially successful films in the 1970s for black audiences.

Cotton Comes To Harlem (1970) Plot

Reverend O’Malley (played by Calvin Lockhart) is a con artist trying to fundraise in Harlem to purchase a ship. This ship’s supposed goal is to be a “Back To Africa” ship called the Black Beauty.

However, while O’Malley is holding a rally, robbers appear and steal $87,000 at gunpoint. Two detectives, known as “Gravedigger” (played by Godfrey Cambridge) and “Coffin” (played by Raymond St. Jacques) give chase to the getaway truck, and a bale of cotton falls out of it.

Later on, an old scavenger named Uncle Bud (played by Redd Foxx) finds the bale and sells it to a junk dealer, then for some reason repurchases it for five dollars more. As it turns out, a reward is being offered for the $87,000. The detectives think that the money was inside the lost bale of cotton, so they accuse Revered O’Malley of stealing the money, and use inside information to force the mob to give them $87,000 to give back to the swindled donors. They learn that the old scavenger, Uncle Bud, has taken the money and moved to Ghana.

The 1973 film Hell Up In Harlem is a blaxploitation film known as a “black version of the Godfather”. The movie, a sequel to Black Caesar, was written and directed by Larry Cohen, and has a motown/funk soundtrack. The movie stars Fred Williamson and Margaret Avery.

Hell Up In Harlem (1973) Plot

Tommy Gibbs (played by Fred Williamson) is a black mafia member in Harlem who started his life of crime after being assaulted by a cop as a child. He survived an assassination attempt in the previous film, and is now up against a corrupt DA who is trying to imprison him and his father to stop the drug trade.

Gibbs decides to clean up Harlem and get the drug dealers out of town. While doing this he falls for a woman named Sister Jennifer (played by Margaret Avery). He suddenly finds out from his right-hand man Zach, however, that his father was the one who ordered the death of his ex-wife. He decides to move to Los Angeles and takes Jennifer along with him. Hitmen are sent after him, but he successfully kills them all.

Then, he learns that his righ-hand man actually killed his ex-wife, not his father, and was trying to cause a rift in order to take over Harlem. His father dies from a heart attack, but Gibbs decides to return to New York City subversively, walking in from Philadelphia instead of flying because he knows the streets are watched.

The 1987 film Cobra Nero, also known as Black Cobra, is an Italian ripoff of Cobra starring Sylvester Stallone. The Italian version has an identical plot, and stars Fred Williamson and Sabrina Siani. The movie series is four blaxploitation films directed by Stelvio Massi, Edoardo Margheriti, and Umberto Lenzi.

Plot Summary

A police detective, Robert Malone (played by Fred Williamson) is a rogue cop who shoots several kidnappers during a hostage situation. He then finds himself in a situation where a woman photographer, Elys Trumbo (played by Eva Grimaldi) has been witness to a murder scene and is now pursued by a group of bikers in order to silence her. Malone investigates and finds the group, led by a bandit leader played by Bruno Bilotta. He then proceeds to wreak havoc with them.

The 1983 film Warriors of the Wasteland (also known as The New Barbarians and I nuovi barbari) is a post-apocalyptic film that was produced in Italy and later distributed in the United States. It was filmed in several months just outside Rome and stars Giancarlo Prete, Fred Williamson, George Eastman, Massimo Vanni, Anna Kanakis, Ennio Girolami and Iris Peynado.

The film was considered a blatant ripoff of Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior, but has since garnered significant cult appeal and is famous for the impressive vehicles and fighting sequences, along with a vibey Italo Disco soundtrack.

Warriors of the Wasteland Plot Summary

Thirty years after the present day (which is the year 2019) the world has been reduced to a wasteland after a nuclear war which killed most of humanity. A handful of rag-tag survivors wander around looking for food and water. However, a band of fierce bandits, who call themselves the Templars, prowl around the wasteland preying on the survivors. Led by a prophet called the One (played by George Eastman) they steal the food and kill everyone they come across in a goal of “purging the earth”.

A former member of the bandits, who has left them in order to help the survivors, is now a mercenary named Scorpion (played by Giancarlo Prete). He and his sidekick Nadir (played by Fred Williamson) ride alongside a small caravan of survivors to protect them from the Templars, fending them off, and in the meanwhile falling in love with a girl named Alma (played by Anna Kanakis).
